Laparoscopy is a type of surgery that uses smaller incisions than you might think. The procedure is named after the laparoscope, a thin tool with a tiny video camera and light on the end. When a surgeon inserts it through a small cut and into your body, they can see what's going on inside you on a video monitor. They'd have to make a much larger opening if they didn't have those tools. Your surgeon will not have to reach into your body, either, thanks to special instruments. This also means that there will be less cutting. Before this system, a surgeon operating on a patient's belly had to make a 6-to-12-inch-long incision. This allowed them to see what they were doing. That gave them enough space to see what they were doing and accomplish whatever they needed to. The surgeon makes several small cuts during laparoscopic surgery. Each one is usually no more than a half-inch long. (This is why it's also known as keyhole surgery.) They put a tube through each opening and then insert the camera and surgical instruments. The operation is then performed by the surgeon.
